Wax Melts – Frequently Asked Questions

Wax melts are wickless, scented chunks of wax. Commonly made from soy or paraffin wax, they are scented with aromatic fragrance or essential oils. These small pieces of wax are melted slowly, usually in a ceramic or glass dish through heat from either a tealight or an electric burner.

Scents range from warm and woodsy to floral and fruity. Whatever your preference, we’re sure to have a scent you love. After all, there’s nothing quite like a relaxing evening at home surrounded by comforting fragrances.

Although candles are great and serve a similar purpose, wax melts come in various sizes, scents, and shapes. Due to the scent’s concentration, melts typically give off a much better scent throw to aromatise your home. They are also cheaper, so typically for the price of one large wick candle, you can sample a wide variety of scented melts.

Are you struggling to understand the difference between soy wax and paraffin-based wax? You’re not alone. Knowing which wax is best can be confusing.

Soy wax is literally made from plants. Soybeans are harvested and converted into soy wax. On the other hand, paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum-based crude oil.

Considered a more eco-friendly choice, soy-based melts are made from renewable sources.

Our melts are also vegan friendly and cruelty free.

It varies, some fragrances last a lot longer than others. However, it’s important to remember that the type of wax and warmer can impact their lasting power.

Tealight burners tend to burn at a higher temperature than electric warmers, meaning the wax will burn quicker and may need more frequent replacement.

Consider an electric melt burner with soy wax if you want to get the longest-lasting power from each piece. That way, the wax will burn slower at a lower temperature.

On average, our 25g melts last at least 15 hours when used in an electric burner. Of course, don’t overdo it. Around 12g of wax is more than enough to get the best scent throw possible.

The scent throw is the measurement of perfume strength and how fast it spreads throughout your room. Not all waxes are alike, however, and learning the exact scent throw for any particular wax type, burner, or fragrance often involves some amount of trial and error.

Tealight burners provide a more potent scent throw because of the higher temperature compared to electric warmers. However, fragrance concentration does make a difference. With Balneaves soy wax melts, the fragrance is concentrated just enough to give the perfect scent throw throughout your home.

Wax melts may seem difficult for avid candle lovers. Fortunately, using scented wax to aromatise your home is easy to learn. If you’re using a tealight or electric warmer, simply insert a piece of wax in the well of your wax burner.

Light the tealight or turn on the burner and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of scented wax. Keep in mind that if the throw of your wax diminishes, the wax may need replacing.

Wax melts can be fun, and your scents don’t have to be boring. If you’re feeling adventurous or have trouble choosing a single scent, you can mix it up by adding two different scents to your burner. Experiment as much as you wish with this, as the aromas will smell amazing no matter how you blend them.

Not only can you reuse wax melts, but doing so will help you to get the most out of your purchase. Consequently, recycling your melts will prove helpful if you’re on a budget. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to reuse wax melts forever, as their scent decreases the more you use them.

Let it harden for a few minutes if your wax needs replacing, and scoop it right out of the wax cup. If the wax has hardened too much and won’t budge, warm it just enough to loosen it so you can properly dispose of the wax.

Wipe the dish clean and soak up the excess if necessary, but don’t be rough with the melting plate. Because warmers are made from breakable materials, you might make the wax well unsafe if you accidentally crack or scratch it.

Some of our customers also make their own tea lights from their used wax, saving costs and helping the environment.

Unlike candles, wax melts do not utilize direct heat at all. With tealight burners, the flame goes out on its own when the wick is entirely gone. Of course, it is always important not to leave any flame unattended. If you plan on spending time away, be sure to extinguish the flame before leaving the room.

A safer alternative are electric burners, especially models with timers fitted. However, as with many electrical applicances, they should not be used unattended.

It also goes without saying that scented melts and burners should be kept well out of reach of children and pets.
